How To Make Christmas Trees For Under $15

Do you want to learn how to make two different types of Christmas trees at home for $13 each (or maybe even less)? If so, keep reading and watch how easy both types of these Christmas trees are to make!

It’s crazy how easy these DIY Christmas trees are to make and you only need two supplies for the first style: a tomato cage and flocked garland!

TOMATO CAGE CHRISTMAS TREE

Step 1:

The first step for the tomato cage tree  is to get the size tomato cage you would like and to choose your garland.  I chose flocked garland but if you want to save even more money (or you just don’t like the look of a flocked garland) you could always use regular green garland.  I chose a 3′ tall tomato cage with a 9′ garland from Walmart.

Step 2:

Use the wire end of the garland and twist that around the tomato cage so it wont move while you twist the rest of the garland up the cage.

Step 3:

Take the rest of your garland and wind it around the tomato cage until you reach the top of it.  You may have to do this a few times until you get your desired look.   Once you are satisfied with the twisted garland, use the wire to twist around the top to finish securing the garland to the tomato cage.  You can then pull apart the “stems” on the garland to fill in or “fluff”  and Christmas tree.

Step 4:

Add lights if desired (this may not help you this year; but if you really want to save money for next year try to snag Christmas lights when retailers often slash the prices of them on December 26 (or at whatever date your local retailer starts clearing out Christmas lights).

PENCIL CHRISTMAS TREE

For the second style Christmas tree, you will be using wood instead of a tomato cage with the garland.

Step 1:

Gather your materials. I used a 1×10 cut at 10″ for the base, a 2×2 cut at your desired length (I cut mine at 6′), a 1×2 cut into several pieces at 12″ or less (I chose XXX pieces cut at 12″), a few wood screws and their required bit(s), and a drill or impact driver.  An appropriately sized drill bit to pre-drill the wood may not be necessary to complete the project but it would be a good addition.

Step 2:

Take the 1×10 and your 2×2, then place the 2×2 in the middle of the 1×10 (your base).  The 2×2 is going to be your tree “trunk” so you will want to position it in the middle of the 1×10 and use a screw to fasten them together.

Step 3:

Add the 1x2s horizontally to the 2×2 and screw together about 12 inches apart from each other. Then, take the garland and attach to the top of the wood with a screw or nail.

Step 4:

Start bringing the garland down towards the base, securing it by twisting it around the top of the wood. A zig zag pattern with the garland helps it maintain a more natural look. Once attached, you may “fluff” the garland to complete the look.  Lights can also be added if desired.
